How Much Does a Long-Distance Move Actually Cost?

Ask five different moving companies for a long-distance quote and you'll often get five different numbers — which makes it hard to know if you're comparing real estimates or comparing apples to oranges. Here's what actually drives the price of an interstate move, so you can tell a fair quote from a red flag.

Weight and distance are the two biggest factors, and legitimate interstate movers price by both. A binding estimate is built from the actual weight of your shipment (measured on a certified scale) and the mileage between your old home and new one. If a company quotes you a flat number over the phone without asking about your home's size or discussing an in-home or video survey, that's usually a sign the estimate isn't binding — and the final bill can come in much higher on move day.

Access and logistics add real cost that's easy to overlook when comparing quotes. Long carry distances (if a truck can't park close to your door), stairs with no elevator, and shuttle service (a smaller truck required when a full-size semi can't reach your street) are all legitimate add-on charges. Ask upfront whether your quote already accounts for these at both ends of the move, not just the origin.

Timing matters more for long-distance moves than people expect. Summer (especially the last week of the month, when leases turn over) is peak season and pricing runs higher industry-wide. If your move date has any flexibility, a mid-month, off-peak-season date can meaningfully lower your cost — sometimes by 20% or more for the exact same shipment.

The single best way to protect yourself against a bad long-distance quote is a written, binding (or binding-not-to-exceed) estimate from a company that's properly registered with the USDOT for interstate moves — not just a verbal number over the phone. At Steadfast, every long-distance quote includes a real weight-and-distance breakdown before you book, so there's nothing to renegotiate on delivery day.
