The Ultimate Packing Checklist Before Moving Day

By Marcus Delgado, Founder, Steadfast Moving & Storage · April 22, 2026

Most packing stress doesn't come from having too much to pack — it comes from packing the wrong things at the wrong time. A little sequencing turns moving week from a scramble into a calm, room-by-room process. Here's the order that actually works.

Three to four weeks out, start with the rooms you use least: the garage, guest room, attic, or storage closets. Off-season clothing, holiday decorations, books, and anything you haven't touched in six months can all go in boxes early without disrupting daily life. Label every box with both the room it's going to AND a one-line contents summary — 'Kitchen — baking dishes,' not just 'Kitchen' — so unpacking is as fast as packing.

Two weeks out, move to the rooms you use daily but can live without a few duplicates of — kitchen (pack everything except a small 'moving week kit' of a few plates, utensils, and a pot), living room decor, and closets you can pare down to a week's worth of outfits. This is also the right time to start a dedicated 'first night' box for each family member: toiletries, a phone charger, a change of clothes, and any medication, packed last and loaded onto the truck last so it's the first thing off.

The final 48 hours are for the essentials you can't live without until moving day itself — bedding, the bathroom you actually use, remaining kitchen items, and electronics. Disconnect and pack electronics last and label their cables clearly; a phone photo of the cable setup behind your TV or router before you unplug anything saves real frustration at the new place.

A few things should never go in a moving box at all: passports, jewelry, and important documents belong in a bag you personally carry, not on the truck. Propane tanks, aerosols, paint, and other flammables aren't accepted by any licensed mover for safety reasons — plan to use these up or dispose of them properly before move day instead. If you'd rather skip the packing altogether, our packing crews can handle any part of this checklist for you, room by room.
